Saturday evening Nov 1 offers a trifecta of food, conversation, and music, featuring DJ Spooky (Paul Miller), tasty eats from Michael Hebb's One Pot, and sharp wit from Charles Mudede.
The get together is in honor of DJ Spooky's new book "Sound Unbound: Sampling Digital Music and Culture." (Party-goers will receive a copy.) About the book, Branford Marsalis said, "Paul Miller has grabbed disparate philosophies and references from the past five hundred years and tied them into a neat and interesting narrative on music, sound, and current thought in our time. Sound Unbound is an excellent reference on art—in the popular context—in the twenty-first century."
This intriguing and sure-to-be-yummy get together will take place at the Caffe Vita loft space on Capitol Hill. RSVP is required; space is limited and going fast. You can opt for with or without the One Pot dinner ($45/$30). Dinner package starts at 6pm and the post-dinner event begins at 8:30. Things will wrap up by 10:00pm so DJ Spooky can get over to Fremont for his show at The Nectar later.

Music: DJ Z-Trip's Obama mix
Check out this great mix from mashup DJ Z-Trip. He and artist Shepard Fairey organized a "Party for Change" fundraiser for Barack Obama last month, and Z-Trip has made the mix freely available for download. It's the soundtrack of our lives over the next few weeks. Get it.

Boys Noize is the sh*tz
German DJ Boys Noize (Alexander Ridha) is a rising star in electro dance and has a post-Daft Punk vibe. He stopped into Chop Suey on Friday to play the monthly Broken Disco night after killing it earlier in the week at the I Heart Comix SXSW party in Austin.
Boys Noize brought his "A" game to Seattle and had a swell time raising the noise (sorry) for a full house of sweaty, dancing maniacs. The all-ages dance floor was fully packed for his entire set and the crowd didn't want to leave when the house lights came on. Repeated pleas to exit to the rear were finally honored, amidst discussions of which afterparty to go to.
Boys Noize is confirmed on the lineup of several high-profile festivals later this year, including Coachella in Indio CA and Sonar in Barcelona. Catch him if you get a chance! Your dancing booty will thank you.

Unkle splits: hold my hand
Unkle's War Stories is in heavy play on my i-Pod right now, so I'm sad to hear James Lavelle and Richard File are going their separate ways. Amicably and mutually, they say. I first heard Unkle when Reign was remixed by another fav pair of mine, Evil Nine. Reign is a hot tune on it's own, and turns into a real banger in the Niners' hands.
Hold My Hand is a standout track from the Unkle War Stories cd. You can catch it on Unkle's myspace. (Also check Evil Nine's remix of that track on their myspace.) The formal statement about the split indicates that Richard File is focusing on a new band of his own.
Given the history of Unkle, I'm not sure it is quite yet time to say RIP. Who would you want to see Lavelle pair up with next?

Review: mashup dj Z-Trip in Seattle
Z-Trip's mashup set on Friday night included samples from led zep, stevie wonder, justice, and everything in between. Brilliant pairings, smooth transitions, smart shout-outs, and freaking mad skilz on the decks worked the crowd in a love frenzy. Wow.
Z-Trip is an energetic dj who knows how to read the room, pull people in, work 'em up, and make ya forget there's a world outside. The give-and-take between dj and audience is key to a memorable experience. Z-Trip gets it and works it just right: genuine, responsive, playful. Left us begging for more. Word.
Demographics: 70% boys, 30% girls, mostly in gender-specific groups. 20% were in boy/girl pairs. Attire: mixed. Girls more dressed up than boys, but on the cheap-sparkly side. Avg age: 24

Stalker Opportunities (01.17.08)
I've been so uncommitted the last couple of weeks I haven't tossed out any stalker opportunities. what have you all done with yourselves?
Blame it on post-holiday malaise. Trust me: I did get out. Just didn't want to commit to anything in advance and risk leaving you brokenly disappointed. That post-holiday malaise has passed, so here's what I've got on my list in coming days:

Monday Jan 21st: Apt #1325 Monday Night Residency w/ Throw Me the Statue @ Chop Suey. This is the third and final night of residency with TMtS and guests. TMtS has been getting press from the likes of stereogum, pitchfork, and filter. Also want to give props to Chop Suey for giving the residency thing a solid go.
Stalker Opportunities: Feb 1 - 15

Justice, Diplo, Chromeo, DJ Mehdi tour in March
W00t!
Justice is to headline a North American tour in March and will be part of a blowout lineup including Diplo, Chromeo, and DJ Mehdi on select dates.
The Seattle show will be at the Showbox Sodo, a bigger venue than any of these guys have previously played in Seattle (Justice and Diplo @ Neumos, Chromeo @ War Room).
Be ready to get your dance on and get sweaty. The Sodo gets hot on the floor.
UPDATE: The Seattle show on March 24th will include Diplo and Fancy. [pitchfork]
